Fire trucks offered a water salute as search and rescue teams left the site of the devastating condo collapse in Surfside, Florida. The month-long recovery effort came to an end on Friday and the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Urban Search and Rescue Team, Florida Task Force One and City of Miami Fire Department’s Florida Task Force Two departed from the Champlain Towers South with the death toll at 97.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava thanked the men and women who assisted in the search and rescue efforts. She added that their tenacity and dedication kept the hope of those families alive and assured them they would do anything to help.

She went on to say, “to each and every one of you, from the bottom of my heart, you have shown the world what superheroes look like.”

After a month-long deployment taking part in search, rescue & recovery efforts at the #SurfsideBuildingCollapse, #MDFR #FLTF1 received a warm welcome from loved ones at HQ. Miami-Dade Fire Chief Alan Cominsky said the way the crews handled the recovery efforts shows the kind of people they are.

“What we just encountered these past 30 days, this represents what we are and who we are,” he expressed. “You know, as a fire service and obviously as a task force.”

Levine-Cava called the crews her inspiration after all they have done to help the families who fell victim to the catastrophic June 24 collapse.

Today I visited the Surfside debris collection site where our work continues around the clock. I am deeply grateful to the men & women leading this enormous task—sifting through millions of pounds of debris, searching for remains & for personal items—to bring closure to families. pic.twitter.com/DwB4YGPYqf
